Titanic Basic Background Information 

  • Almost everyone has read a book or watched any number of movies about the sinking of the White Star passenger liner, "Titanic"  This site will attempt to summarize some specific facts regarding the ship as follows:
  • Titanic was the 2nd of three "Olympic" class passenger liners built by Harland and Wolf, Belfast, Northern Ireland for the White Star Line and was launched May 31, 1911.
  • Specifications:

           Length. 882 feet

           Beam (width) 92 feet

           Displacement.  52310 tons

           Speed.  23 knots (top speed)

           Propellors.  3

           Capacity.  3547 people

           Complement.  (on maiden voyage) 2208 people

  •   Safety equipment

                Ship was divided by 16 transvers watertight bulkheads up to 10 feet above the waterline.

                Equipped with 16 lifeboats (capacity of 60 people each) plus 4 "collapsible" lifeboats with a

                capacity of 40 people each. 

                Total lifesaving capacity was 1178
